PRO-D FAQS

How much do I get for Pro-D each year?

Each year, LCTA members are eligible for up to $500 in funding. This amount may be rolled over for one year only, allowing members to access up to $1,000 every second year. Unused funds beyond one year do not carry forward.

You may use your Pro-D funds to help cover the following:

4.9.1 TTOC costs;

4.9.2 Registration fees;

4.9.3 Travel costs: ferry and/or fuel costs to and from venue;

4.9.4 Accommodation;

4.9.5 Meal allowance.

4.9.6 Other Professional Development activities may include one time personal growth workshops or conferences that contribute to a member’s overall health and well being. This excludes ongoing classes or lessons, vacations, and any activity that is covered under other employee benefits and compensations.

What is self-directed Pro-D?

Self‑Directed Professional Development, as endorsed by the BCTF, empowers educators to define, plan, pursue, and reflect on their own professional learning. It aligns with BCTF and LCTA  expectations by grounding growth in teacher-identified goals, voluntary engagement, reflective practice, and appropriate submission to supporting Professional Development  structures. Proper planning and documented reflection help ensure effectiveness, deepen teacher agency, and support enhanced student learning.

How often and when may I do self-directed Pro-D?

There are three professional development days scheduled each year. You may choose to use any one of these days for self-directed professional development. However, the LCTA strongly encourages members to attend the school-based and LCTA-hosted Pro-D days held in February and May.

In October members are encouraged to engage with PSA (Professional Learning Association) workshops. This can be remote or in person.  If you are wanting to do Self Directed Pro-D this year, this is the best day for that too.

Must I attend Pro-D?

February 12, 2027 and May 7, 2027 are our school based and local Pro- D events.  On these days, the following applies.

On all Professional Development Days (Including District directed Non-Instructional Days) it is expected that all teachers will be in attendance at professional development activities. However, the ultimate onus or responsibility rests with the individual member.

If you are unwell or unable to attend for any reason, you must "call in" using the correct absence code.

The School District as our employer can ask for records of who attended our Pro-D events and ask what activities/events teachers participated in.

May I do course work towards a Master's Degree or 5+ certificate as part of self-directed Pro-D?

Before the Pro-D day, complete a Pro-D intention form indicating that you will be engaging in master’s-level coursework relevant to your teaching practice. Submit the form to the LCTA Pro-D committe chairperson  to ensure awareness and approval. Be sure to keep a record of your work, such as a coursework outline or a brief reflection, in case documentation is requested.

You are unable to use Pro-D funds to cover the cost of these courses.
